The central Main Street corridor provides well-located options with good access to public transport and the main pedestrian zone.

Other Attractions

The Old Town, known locally as Staria Grad, is one of the best-preserved historic districts in the Balkans, featuring cobblestone streets, colorful National Revival-era houses, and Roman ruins integrated into the urban landscape. The Ancient Theatre of Philippopolis, a remarkably intact Roman amphitheatre from the second century, remains a striking landmark. The Kapana creative quarter offers independent galleries, craft workshops, and a vibrant café culture. Day trips to Bachkovo Monastery, one of Bulgaria's most important Orthodox monasteries set in a forested river valley, are easily arranged from the city.

History & Culture

Plovdiv is widely regarded as one of Europe's oldest continuously inhabited cities, with settlements on its distinctive syenite hills dating back thousands of years. It flourished as Philippopolis under Philip II of Macedon and later became an important provincial capital during the Roman Empire, leaving behind monuments still visible today. Through Byzantine, Ottoman, and Bulgarian periods, the city accumulated a layered cultural identity evident in its architecture and religious heritage. The National Revival period of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries gave Plovdiv much of its celebrated character, as wealthy merchants built the ornate mansions that now define the Old Town. Plovdiv's designation as a European Capital of Culture in 2019 brought renewed international attention to its arts scene and public spaces, reinforcing its reputation as one of Bulgaria's most dynamic and historically significant cities.
