Plan Your Visit to Heidelberg

Getting There

Heidelberg is easily reached via Frankfurt Airport, approximately 80 kilometers north, with direct train connections taking around one hour. The city's main station (Hauptbahnhof) sits on major rail lines connecting to Stuttgart, Mannheim, and other German cities. Visitors arriving by car will find Heidelberg accessible via the A5 autobahn, though the historic Altstadt is largely pedestrianized.

Where to Stay

The Altstadt offers the most atmospheric base for exploring the city, with centuries-old buildings housing hotels and guesthouses within walking distance of major attractions. The Weststadt and Bergheim neighborhoods provide quieter alternatives with good public transport links to the historic center. Accommodations near the Hauptbahnhof suit travelers prioritizing easy rail connections while remaining close to the old town.

Other Attractions

The imposing Heidelberg Castle ruins dominate the hillside above the old town, offering spectacular views over the Neckar River valley and housing a historic wine barrel. The Altstadt's baroque architecture and the Philosophers' Walk, a scenic path along the opposite hillside, provide atmospheric strolls through centuries of academic heritage. Germany's oldest university, founded in 1386, lends the city its distinctive scholarly character, with historic lecture halls and the Student Prison (Studentenkarzer) open to visitors. The Carl Theodor Bridge (Old Bridge) remains one of Germany's most photographed landmarks.

History & Culture

Heidelberg's origins trace to Celtic and Roman settlements, though the city gained prominence in the Middle Ages as the residence of the Palatinate electors. The founding of Ruprecht Karl University in 1386 established Heidelberg as a center of learning and humanism, attracting scholars from across Europe. The city's golden age ended dramatically during the War of the Palatine Succession in 1693, when French troops destroyed much of the town and castle. Rebuilt in the baroque style during the 18th century, Heidelberg escaped major damage in World War II, preserving its romantic streetscapes that inspired Goethe, Turner, and countless other artists. The city's combination of ruined castle, historic university, and picturesque river setting has made it a symbol of German Romanticism.

Christmas markets have been held in Heidelberg since at least the 18th century, traditionally centered around the Kornmarkt square beneath the castle. These gatherings evolved from simple winter trading occasions into the festive celebrations known today, reflecting the city's blend of academic and mercantile traditions.
