Explore the magical atmosphere of Munich's Christmas markets

Founded by Benedictine monks in the 12th century, Munich takes its name from the Old High German word for monks. The city rose to prominence as the seat of the Wittelsbach dynasty, who ruled Bavaria for over seven centuries and transformed Munich into a center of art, culture, and brewing tradition. The devastating impact of World War II left much of the historic center in ruins, but painstaking reconstruction efforts restored many of Munich's architectural treasures to their former glory. Today, the city balances its deep-rooted traditions with a thoroughly modern, cosmopolitan character.
Christmas Market History: Munich's Christkindlmarkt traces its origins to the 14th century, making it one of Germany's oldest Christmas market traditions. The market centered on Marienplatz has been documented since at least the 1300s, when craftsmen and traders gathered to sell seasonal goods before the winter holidays. Over the centuries, the tradition evolved from a practical winter fair into the elaborate celebration of Bavarian Christmas customs seen today, with the iconic illuminated tree and Christkind opening ceremony becoming beloved fixtures of Munich's festive season.
