Explore the magical atmosphere of Dinkelsbuhl's Christmas markets

Dinkelsbühl received its town charter in the 13th century and grew into a prosperous Free Imperial City, benefiting from its position along important trade routes through southern Germany. Wealth from commerce funded the imposing St. George's Church and the robust ring of fortifications that largely survives today. Unlike many German towns, Dinkelsbühl escaped significant destruction during the Thirty Years' War—a deliverance local legend attributes to the town's children interceding before the besieging Swedish army. This event is commemorated annually in the Kinderzech festival each summer. The exceptional preservation gives the town a distinctive character, particularly in winter when snow settles on half-timbered facades and medieval towers. The town's Christmas market, held within the historic old town, reflects this deep tradition of civic celebration. Set against medieval architecture, it maintains an intimate, unhurried character rooted in local craft and custom rather than commercialization.

This adventure is all about how a city is trying to maintain its rich cultural heritage and traditions fighting against all odds. The City Council of Dinkelsbühl has gone an extra mile to celebrate Christmas Market in a new way, where instead of the regular Christmas market concept, with all shops cluttered in the city centre, they have created a Christmas village with Christ
