Plan Your Visit to Leipzig

Getting There

Leipzig/Halle Airport connects the city to major European hubs, though many visitors arrive via Berlin or Frankfurt and continue by train. Leipzig Hauptbahnhof is one of Europe's largest railway stations, with frequent high-speed rail connections throughout Germany and neighboring countries. The city center is compact and easily walkable from the main station.

Where to Stay

The city center around Markt and Augustusplatz places visitors within walking distance of major attractions and shopping arcades. The Zentrum district offers accommodation ranging from boutique hotels to international chains, all convenient for exploring on foot. Staying near Hauptbahnhof provides excellent transport links and immediate access to the station's historic shopping galleries.

Other Attractions

Leipzig's musical heritage centers on the Bach Museum and St. Thomas Church, where Johann Sebastian Bach served as cantor. The Monument to the Battle of the Nations, a massive structure commemorating the 1813 defeat of Napoleon, offers panoramic views from its summit. The revitalized Plagwitz industrial quarter features converted factories housing galleries, cafés, and the Karl-Heine Canal. Leipzig Zoo is known for its Gondwanaland tropical hall.

History & Culture

Leipzig's history as a trading crossroads dates to medieval times, when its position at the intersection of major trade routes established it as a prominent market town. The city became a center of publishing, music, and learning, attracting figures like Bach, Mendelssohn, Wagner, and Goethe. Leipzig's trade fair tradition, among the oldest in the world, shaped its mercantile character and elegant arcades. In 1989, the Monday Demonstrations beginning at St. Nicholas Church played a pivotal role in the peaceful revolution that led to German reunification.

Christmas Market History: Leipzig's Christmas market tradition extends back to 1458, making it one of Germany's oldest. The market has historically been centered on the Markt square, where merchants have gathered for centuries to sell seasonal goods, crafts, and festive treats. This long-standing tradition reflects the city's deep roots as a trading hub, with the winter market serving as both a commercial and social gathering point through the centuries.
