Christmas Markets in Linz 2022

Christmas Markets in Linz 2022

After having checked out at least 15 Christmas markets in Vienna I wanted to find a place that was less fanatic about Christmas Markets. So I went to Linz. Linz is the capital of the Austrian state of Upper Austria. It is a cute city and sometimes overlooked compared to cities like Salzburg or Innsbruck and of course Vienna. You can reach the city by train from Vienna in less than 1,5 hrs. Watch my video to discover the Christmas markets there that are less in numbers than in Vienna and less hec

It's a cold foggy day just before Christmas and we have just disembarked from the SS Beatrice, a Uniworld boat that has taken us from Nuremberg to Linz. We have enjoyed the Christmas Markets in Nuremberg, Regensburg and to-day, in Linz, Austria. The Christmas markets in Linz, Austria, offer a magical festive experience with twinkling lights, traditional wooden stalls, and the scent of mulled wine and roasted chestnuts filling the air. The main markets, held in the Hauptplatz and Volksgarten, f

Austria's Christmas Markets: Linz

In this video I’ll take you on a quick tour around the Christkindlmarkt in Linz. Now, unfortunately Austria’s Christmas markets were cancelled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. So I’m going to show you the Linzer Christkindlmarkt in 2019 and hopefully shoppers will be able to enjoy this great market again next Christmas. Linz, with a population of over 200,000, is Austria’s third biggest city, and it’s situated on the river Danube. The Hauptplatz is the baroque main square of Linz and it

Plan Your Visit to Linz

Getting There

Linz is well connected by rail, with frequent direct trains from Vienna, Salzburg, and Munich arriving at Linz Hauptbahnhof in the city center. Blue Danube Airport Linz offers regional flights and connections to major European hubs, located approximately 14 kilometers southwest of the city. The A1 and A7 motorways provide straightforward road access for those traveling by car.

Where to Stay

The Altstadt and areas around Hauptplatz place visitors within easy walking distance of historic sights and cultural attractions. The Urfahr district across the Danube offers quieter residential charm with good tram connections to the center. Hotels near the main train station provide convenient access for those arriving by rail.

Other Attractions

The Ars Electronica Center on the Danube riverbank offers interactive exhibitions exploring art, technology, and society. The Lentos Art Museum showcases modern and contemporary works in a striking glass building overlooking the river. Linz's historic Hauptplatz, one of Austria's largest medieval squares, is surrounded by baroque townhouses and anchored by the Trinity Column. The Pöstlingberg hill, reached by a steep adhesion railway, rewards visitors with panoramic views and a charming fairy-tale grotto. Food lovers should seek out Linzer Torte, the city's famous almond and jam pastry, at traditional cafés throughout the old town.

History & Culture

Linz traces its roots to a Roman fortification called Lentia, established along a strategic Danube crossing nearly two millennia ago. The city flourished during the Middle Ages as a trade hub and imperial residence, with Emperor Friedrich III choosing Linz as his seat in the 15th century. Its baroque architecture reflects prosperity from the Counter-Reformation era, while the 19th century brought industrialization that transformed Linz into a major manufacturing center.

Despite its industrial heritage, Linz has reinvented itself as a cultural capital, earning recognition as a European Capital of Culture in 2009 and maintaining a vibrant arts scene alongside its historic core. The city's Christmas market tradition centers on the magnificent Hauptplatz, where seasonal celebrations have been documented since the 18th century. The market's setting beneath baroque facades and the Trinity Column creates an atmospheric backdrop that reflects the city's identity as both a guardian of heritage and an innovator in the arts.
