Christmas Markets in Rennes

Rennes emerged as the capital of Brittany after the region's union with France in the 16th century, though its roots stretch back to Roman times when it was known as Condate. The city's medieval prosperity came from its role as seat of the Breton parliament, attracting nobles and merchants who built the elegant townhouses still visible today. A devastating fire in 1720 destroyed much of the medieval core, leading to the reconstruction of broad classical avenues alongside the surviving timber-framed quarters.
