Plan Your Visit to Rennes

Getting There

Rennes sits in northwestern France with excellent rail connections from Paris, reaching the city in under two hours via high-speed TGV service from Gare Montparnasse. The city's airport offers seasonal flights from several European destinations, while regional trains connect Rennes to Brittany's coastal towns and neighboring cities. Drivers will find Rennes accessible via major motorways linking Paris, Nantes, and the Breton peninsula.

Where to Stay

The historic center within the medieval ramparts offers the most atmospheric base, placing visitors within walking distance of cultural sites and traditional restaurants. The area around Place de la Mairie and Rue Saint-Michel provides convenient access to major attractions. Budget-conscious travelers will find good-value accommodations near the train station, just a short walk from the old town.

Other Attractions

The historic center showcases half-timbered houses along cobbled streets, particularly striking around Place des Lices and Place Sainte-Anne, where medieval architecture survived the great fire of 1720. The Parlement de Bretagne stands as a masterpiece of 17th-century design, while the Musée des Beaux-Arts houses an impressive collection spanning centuries of European art. The Saturday morning market at Place des Lices ranks among France's most celebrated weekly markets, offering fresh produce, local specialties, and traditional Breton foods. The Thabor Gardens provide a peaceful retreat with formal French landscaping and botanical collections.

History & Culture

Rennes emerged as the capital of Brittany after the region's union with France in the 16th century, though its roots stretch back to Roman times when it was known as Condate. The city's medieval prosperity came from its role as seat of the Breton parliament, attracting nobles and merchants who built the elegant townhouses still visible today. A devastating fire in 1720 destroyed much of the medieval core, leading to the reconstruction of broad classical avenues alongside the surviving timber-framed quarters. This blend of medieval and 18th-century architecture gives Rennes its distinctive character. The city has long maintained strong Breton cultural traditions while serving as a modern administrative and university center.
