Plan Your Visit to Frankfurt

Getting There

Frankfurt Airport is one of Europe's largest hubs, offering direct flights from cities worldwide. Rail connections from the airport reach the city center in approximately 15 minutes. The main train station, Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof, serves as a major junction for high-speed rail throughout Germany and neighboring countries. The city is easily accessible via the German autobahn network for those arriving by car.

Where to Stay

The Altstadt and Innenstadt areas place visitors within walking distance of historic attractions and major sights. Sachsenhausen, across the river, offers a quieter residential atmosphere while remaining well-connected by public transport and bridges. Hotels near the Hauptbahnhof provide excellent transport links and convenient access to the city center.

Other Attractions

The Römerberg, Frankfurt's reconstructed medieval square, features traditional half-timbered houses and the iconic city hall. The Museumsufer district along the Main River hosts world-class institutions including the Städel Museum, renowned for its European art collection. Frankfurt's modern skyline offers observation decks atop towers like Main Tower for panoramic city views. The Sachsenhausen district is known for its traditional apple wine taverns, offering authentic regional cuisine and atmosphere.

History & Culture

Frankfurt's history stretches back to Roman times, though the city gained prominence in the Middle Ages as the site where Holy Roman Emperors were elected and crowned in the cathedral. Its position along the Main River made it a vital trading center, and by the nineteenth century Frankfurt had become Germany's financial capital, a role it maintains today as home to the European Central Bank. The city suffered extensive bombing during World War II, resulting in the loss of much medieval architecture, though key landmarks like the Römerberg have been carefully reconstructed.

Christmas Market History: Frankfurt's Christmas market tradition dates back to 1393, making it one of Germany's oldest. Historical records document that craftsmen and merchants gathered in the Römerberg during Advent to sell seasonal goods, toys, and festive treats. The market has evolved over six centuries while maintaining its focus on traditional crafts and regional specialties, establishing Frankfurt as a cornerstone of German Christmas market heritage.
