Getting There

Salzburg Airport, located four kilometers from the city center, offers direct flights from major European cities with convenient bus connections into town. The city benefits from excellent rail connections, with frequent services from Vienna, Munich, and other Austrian and German cities arriving at the centrally located Hauptbahnhof. Visitors driving from Germany can reach Salzburg easily via the A8 autobahn.

Where to Stay

The Altstadt places visitors within walking distance of major attractions, though accommodations here tend to book early and command premium rates. The Neustadt across the river offers excellent value with easy access via pedestrian bridges. Areas near the Hauptbahnhof provide convenient transport links and a range of hotels and guesthouses suitable for various budgets.

Other Attractions

The UNESCO-listed Altstadt captivates with its baroque architecture, dominated by the imposing Hohensalzburg Fortress perched above the Salzach River. Mozart's birthplace on Getreidegasse draws music lovers year-round, while the opulent Mirabell Palace and Gardens offer stunning views against Alpine peaks. The city's renowned café culture invites visitors to sample Mozartkugel chocolates and traditional Sachertorte. Day trips to nearby Hallstatt or the Bavarian Alps are easily arranged. Film enthusiasts often follow The Sound of Music trail through the city's picturesque squares and surrounding countryside.

History & Culture

Salzburg's history stretches back to Roman times, but the city truly flourished under powerful prince-archbishops who transformed it into a baroque masterpiece between the 16th and 18th centuries. These ecclesiastical rulers commissioned the grand churches, palaces, and fountains that define the cityscape today, while fostering a rich musical tradition that produced Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1756. The city's name, meaning "Salt Fortress," reflects its medieval prosperity built on the salt trade from nearby mines, wealth that funded the architectural splendor surviving intact today.

Salzburg's Christmas market tradition dates back over five centuries, with documented evidence of festive markets in the cathedral square as early as the 15th century. The Christkindlmarkt evolved from a simple trading fair where locals purchased winter provisions and handcrafted goods into one of Austria's most atmospheric seasonal celebrations. Today the markets honor this heritage with an emphasis on regional craftsmanship, Advent music, and time-honored customs reflecting Salzburg's deep Catholic roots and Alpine culture.
