Getting There

Villach is well connected by rail, with direct services to Vienna, Salzburg, Graz, Ljubljana, and Venice. The city sits on major Central European routes, making it accessible from across the region. Klagenfurt Airport, approximately 40 kilometres to the east, handles regional flights, while Trieste and Ljubljana airports offer additional international options. The city is easily reached by road via the Austrian motorway network, with routes converging from Italy, Slovenia, and northern Austria.

Where to Stay

The city centre places visitors within easy walking distance of the Hauptplatz and surrounding streets where most activity is concentrated. The area around the main square and pedestrian zone offers hotels and guesthouses suited to different budgets. The Warmbad district provides a quieter alternative with the added appeal of thermal spa facilities.

Other Attractions

The old town rewards leisurely exploration, with its pedestrianised Hauptplatz framed by colourful historic facades and the parish church of St. Jakob, whose tower offers panoramic views of the surrounding Alps. The Municipal Museum provides insight into the region's Roman heritage and medieval past. The Warmbad district, just south of the city centre, features thermal baths fed by natural warm springs. Day trips to the Carinthian lake district and the Julian Alps across the Slovenian border are popular with visitors seeking alpine scenery.

History & Culture

Villach traces its origins to a Roman settlement known as Bilachinium, established at a strategically important crossing of the Drau River. The city developed into a prosperous trading town during the medieval period under the Counts of Ortenburg and later the Habsburgs, whose long stewardship shaped much of Carinthia's cultural and architectural character. A devastating earthquake in 1348 caused considerable damage, yet the city rebuilt and continued to flourish as a regional centre. Villach's position at the crossroads of Austrian, Slovenian, and Italian cultural traditions gives it distinctive character. This blend of influences is evident in its cuisine, architecture, and local customs, creating an atmosphere that feels genuinely rooted in local life.
