Explore the magical atmosphere of Wels's Christmas markets

Wels is one of Austria's oldest cities, with roots stretching back to the Roman era when it flourished as Ovilava, an important administrative and trading hub in the province of Noricum. The settlement eventually received the status of a Roman colony, and archaeological finds from this period remain significant to the city's identity. Through the medieval period, Wels developed as a prosperous market town, its central location along trade routes sustaining a lively commercial culture. The city is also remembered as the place where Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I died in 1519, an event that left a lasting mark on local historical memory. This layered past spanning Roman antiquity, medieval commerce, and imperial history gives Wels considerable depth of character.
