The Welser Weihnachtswelt in Wels, Austria, is the award-winning Christmas market event that earned the city the prestigious title of European City of Christmas 2026 — the first German-speaking city ever to receive this honor from the Christmas Cities Network in cooperation with the European Parliament. Spread across the historic Stadtplatz and surrounding city center streets, this multi-venue celebration transforms Wels into a festive advent village every year from mid-November through December 24. The event encompasses three distinct market zones, each with its own character. The Bergweihnacht at Stadtplatz is the centerpiece, featuring a romantic alpine-style village of larchwood huts, regional handicrafts, choral and brass performances, and what is claimed to be the world's largest Christkind figure. The illuminated Ledererturm tower anchors the scene, while a giant Advent wreath with meter-high candles stands before the Rathaus. The Winterzauber im Pollheimerpark offers a family-focused experience with a children's carousel, chain swing ride, pony rides, and a full spread of festive food. The Gösser Biergarten Advent rounds out the trio with a cozy beer garden atmosphere under illuminated chestnut trees, serving Finnish Glögg and Styrian mulled wine. Connecting all three venues is the celebrated Welser Lichterpfad, a 1.7 km illuminated trail featuring over 800,000 LED lights, 29 distinct light installations, and more than 100,000 crystals adorning the lanterns. Inside the Ledererturm, visitors can explore the Christkind's heavenly cloud kingdom and drop off wish letters at the Christmas post office. Horse-drawn carriage rides through the illuminated inner city depart from the Almdorfbühne for just €5 per person.
