Explore the magical atmosphere of Erfurt's Christmas markets

Erfurt is one of central Germany's oldest and best-preserved cities, with roots in the early medieval period. It rose to prominence as a trading hub on the Via Regia, a major east-west European route, and later prospered through the cultivation and export of woad, a blue dye plant that brought considerable wealth during the Middle Ages. The city was home to one of the earliest universities in the German-speaking world, founded in the late fourteenth century. Martin Luther studied here before his pivotal role in the Reformation. The historic core survived the Second World War largely intact, preserving an unusually complete ensemble of medieval and early modern architecture that gives the city genuine continuity with its past. Erfurt's Christmas market on the Domplatz, with the cathedral steps as backdrop, draws on centuries of trade and civic gathering in this central square and has become a major regional winter event.
