Explore the magical atmosphere of Bonn's Christmas markets

Bonn's origins stretch back more than two thousand years to a Roman military camp called Castra Bonnensia on the Rhine's west bank. The city grew in prominence under the Prince-Archbishops of Cologne, who made it their residence and left a legacy of baroque architecture, notably the grand Electoral Palace that now serves as the main building of the University of Bonn. In the twentieth century, Bonn became the capital of West Germany from 1949 until reunification in 1990, giving this Rhine city unexpected historical significance. Today it balances its role as a cultural and academic center with the character of a compact, walkable old town.
Bonn's Christmas market, centered on the historic Münsterplatz beneath the Romanesque basilica, has long been one of the most atmospheric in the Rhineland. The market's medieval setting reflects the city's ecclesiastical roots and draws on the region's craft and culinary heritage to create a tradition that feels rooted in place.

Highlights include a 14-meter grand carousel, a 25-meter illuminated Christmas tree bar, a large Ferris wheel, and regional specialties such as Winzerglühwein and Bönnsch beer.
