Plan Your Visit to Berlin

Getting There

Berlin Brandenburg Airport, located approximately 30 kilometers southeast of the city center, provides extensive European and international connections. The city is a central hub in the German rail network, with frequent high-speed train services to major cities across Germany and neighboring countries. Excellent highway connections make Berlin accessible by car from all directions.

Where to Stay

Mitte, the central district, places visitors within walking distance of major sights, though accommodation tends to be pricier. Prenzlauer Berg and Friedrichshain offer excellent public transport connections while providing a more residential atmosphere with local cafes and restaurants. Charlottenburg, in the western part of the city, combines convenient access to attractions with elegant surroundings and good hotel availability.

Other Attractions

Berlin houses world-class museums on Museum Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site with collections spanning ancient civilizations to modern art. The Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag building, and remnants of the Berlin Wall offer powerful historical encounters. The city's diverse neighborhoods each possess distinct character—from the elegant boulevards of Charlottenburg to the creative energy of Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain. Berlin's culinary scene ranges from traditional German fare and currywurst stands to innovative international cuisine. The city maintains a busy cultural calendar with renowned theater, opera, and concert halls offering performances throughout winter.

History & Culture

Berlin's history stretches back to the 13th century when two merchant settlements merged along the Spree River. The city rose to prominence as the capital of Prussia and later the German Empire, becoming a center of culture, science, and industry by the early 20th century. The devastation of World War II and subsequent division during the Cold War left indelible marks on the city's landscape and character. Since reunification in 1990, Berlin has transformed into a vibrant, multicultural capital that honors its complex past while embracing creativity and innovation.

Berlin's Christmas market tradition dates back several centuries, with markets historically held in various squares throughout the old city. The markets grew particularly elaborate during the 19th century under Prussian rule, becoming important social gatherings during winter months. After reunification, the tradition experienced a renaissance, with both eastern and western parts of the city reviving historical markets and creating new ones that reflect Berlin's diverse neighborhoods and communities.
