Explore the magical atmosphere of Berlin's Christmas markets

Berlin's history stretches back to the 13th century when two merchant settlements merged along the Spree River. The city rose to prominence as the capital of Prussia and later the German Empire, becoming a center of culture, science, and industry by the early 20th century. The devastation of World War II and subsequent division during the Cold War left indelible marks on the city's landscape and character. Since reunification in 1990, Berlin has transformed into a vibrant, multicultural capital that honors its complex past while embracing creativity and innovation.
Berlin's Christmas market tradition dates back several centuries, with markets historically held in various squares throughout the old city. The markets grew particularly elaborate during the 19th century under Prussian rule, becoming important social gatherings during winter months. After reunification, the tradition experienced a renaissance, with both eastern and western parts of the city reviving historical markets and creating new ones that reflect Berlin's diverse neighborhoods and communities.
