EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, located about 70 kilometers south, offers shuttle and train connections to the city. The city is easily accessible by car via major motorways linking France, Germany, and Switzerland.

Where to Stay

The historic center offers the most atmospheric base, with accommodations ranging from charming guesthouses in restored timber-framed buildings to comfortable hotels within walking distance of the main squares. Staying near Place de l'Ancienne Douane or along the streets leading to Petite Venise places visitors at the heart of the old town while maintaining easy access to restaurants and shops.

Other Attractions

The old town showcases exceptional half-timbered architecture, with the Petite Venise quarter offering canal-side walks past colorful medieval houses. The Unterlinden Museum houses the renowned Isenheim Altarpiece alongside an impressive collection of medieval and Renaissance art. Colmar's culinary scene celebrates Alsatian traditions through winstubs serving regional specialties like choucroute and baeckeoffe, and wine cellars offering tastings of local Riesling and Gewürztraminer. The surrounding Alsace Wine Route provides excellent opportunities for day trips through vineyard villages.

History & Culture

Colmar's origins date to the ninth century, though it flourished during the Middle Ages as a free imperial city within the Holy Roman Empire. Its strategic position along trade routes brought prosperity, reflected in the magnificent merchant houses and public buildings that still define its character. The city's Alsatian identity has been shaped by centuries of cultural exchange between French and Germanic traditions, creating a unique blend visible in its architecture, dialect, and customs. This heritage survived remarkably intact through various conflicts, leaving Colmar with one of the best-preserved old towns in the region.

Colmar's Christmas market tradition stretches back several centuries, rooted in medieval winter fairs that brought merchants and craftspeople together during Advent. The modern markets revived these traditions in the late twentieth century, deliberately spreading across multiple historic squares to showcase different aspects of Alsatian Christmas culture. Today the city hosts several themed markets reflecting particular facets of local heritage, from traditional crafts to regional gastronomy.
