Rotterdam's history as a fishing village dates back to the 13th century, when a dam was built on the Rotte River, giving the settlement its name. By the 17th century, it had grown into one of Europe's most important ports, a position maintained for centuries. The city was devastated during World War II when the historic center was almost entirely destroyed in 1940.
