Getting There

Leuven is exceptionally well connected by rail, sitting on a major line between Brussels and Liège. Fast and frequent trains from Brussels-Zaventem Airport take under thirty minutes, making Leuven one of the easiest Belgian cities to reach without a car. The city is also accessible by road via the E40 motorway, which links it to Brussels, Ghent, and the coast.

Where to Stay

Staying in or near the historic centre puts visitors within easy walking distance of the main squares and the university quarter. A range of hotels and guesthouses caters to different budgets, with the area around the Grote Markt and Naamsestraat offering the most convenient base for exploring the city on foot.

Other Attractions

The Grote Markt is dominated by an extraordinary Gothic town hall, one of the most ornate civic buildings in Belgium. The adjacent Sint-Pieterskerk houses an impressive collection of Flemish religious art. The Museum M offers a thoughtful survey of local and international art spanning several centuries, while the historic university library, rebuilt after wartime destruction, stands as a symbol of academic resilience. Leuven is home to AB InBev and has a lively café culture rooted in centuries of brewing tradition, making it particularly rewarding for beer enthusiasts. The surrounding Flemish Brabant countryside offers pleasant day trips to nearby towns such as Tienen and Diest.

History & Culture

Leuven is one of the oldest towns in the Low Countries, with roots stretching back to at least the ninth century, when it served as the seat of the Counts of Leuven who would later become the Dukes of Brabant. The founding of the Catholic University of Leuven in 1425 transformed the city into a major centre of European learning and gave it a cosmopolitan character that it has retained ever since. The university has shaped the city's identity profoundly, filling its streets with students and sustaining a culture of intellectual life and civic pride across six centuries. Leuven suffered considerable destruction during both World Wars, most notably the deliberate burning of its university library by German forces in 1914, an act that shocked the international community and led to a global effort to rebuild the collection. That spirit of cultural renewal remains part of the city's character, and Leuven today balances its medieval heritage with a vibrant, youthful energy drawn from its large student population.
