Getting There

Mons is well connected by rail to Brussels and Lille, making it easily accessible from major international hubs including Brussels Airport and Brussels-South Charleroi Airport. The city sits along key motorway routes linking Belgium to northern France, placing it within comfortable driving distance for visitors across the region. The compact town centre is walkable from the main train station, making arrival straightforward even with luggage.

Where to Stay

The area around the Grand-Place and historic centre offers the most convenient base for visitors, placing guests within easy walking distance of the city's main cultural sites. A range of hotels and smaller guesthouses can be found in and near the centre, suiting both those seeking comfort and those travelling on a modest budget.

Other Attractions

The Collegiate Church of Saint Waudru is a masterpiece of Brabantine Gothic architecture, housing a remarkable collection of Renaissance art and the celebrated Car d'Or processional carriage. The Belfry of Mons, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rises above the Grand-Place and offers sweeping views over the city and surrounding countryside from its upper levels. The Museum of Fine Arts presents strong collections spanning old masters to contemporary work. History enthusiasts will find Mons deeply connected to the First World War, with several memorials and museums in and around the city dedicated to that period.

History & Culture

Mons, known in Dutch as Bergen, traces its origins to a Roman settlement on a prominent hill in the Hainaut region of southern Belgium. It grew into a significant medieval town under the Counts of Hainaut, whose influence shaped much of the city's architectural and cultural identity. The Grand-Place remains one of the finest historic squares in Wallonia, ringed by handsome guild houses and civic buildings reflecting centuries of prosperity. Mons holds a special place in Belgian folklore through the Ducasse festival, a centuries-old tradition culminating in the combat between Saint George and the dragon known as the Lumeçon, inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. The city also carries historical significance as the site of the first and last British engagements of the First World War, lending it a quiet dignity that visitors often find unexpectedly moving.
