Explore the magical atmosphere of Valkenburg's Christmas markets

Valkenburg aan de Geul is one of the oldest towns in the Netherlands, with roots stretching to the early medieval period. Its strategic position on a rocky outcrop above the Geul river made it a natural fortification site, and the castle that dominated the town played a significant role in Low Countries history before being largely destroyed in the late seventeenth century. The town's distinctive character stems from its soft marl limestone geology, which allowed residents to carve cellars, chapels, and passages directly into the hillside over generations. Valkenburg reinvented itself as a leisure destination in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, drawing visitors from across the Netherlands and neighbouring countries to its spa facilities and scenic valley setting.
Valkenburg is home to the Netherlands' oldest Christmas markets, held annually inside its ancient marl caves since the mid-twentieth century. The Kerstmarkt in de Grotten has grown into a beloved seasonal tradition, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. The unique underground setting, with its constant cool temperature and candlelit passages, creates an intimate atmosphere that distinguishes Valkenburg from open-air Christmas markets across Europe.
