Plan Your Visit to Valkenburg

Getting There

Valkenburg is easily reached via Maastricht Aachen Airport or the larger hubs at Eindhoven and Amsterdam Schiphol, with onward connections by road or rail. The town has its own train station on the Maastricht–Heerlen line, making rail travel from major Dutch cities straightforward. By car, Valkenburg sits within easy reach of the Dutch, Belgian, and German motorway networks, positioning it well for exploring the wider Meuse-Rhine region.

Where to Stay

Most visitors stay in or near Valkenburg's historic centre, where hotels and guesthouses place guests within walking distance of main attractions. The surrounding hillside villages and spa hotels offer quieter alternatives while remaining a short drive from town, and Valkenburg's compact scale means accommodation throughout the area is conveniently located.

Other Attractions

Valkenburg Castle, perched on a hilltop, offers panoramic views over the Geul valley and stands as one of the few remaining medieval fortifications in the Netherlands. Beneath the town lies an extensive network of marl caves, including the Gemeentegrot and Fluweelengrot, carved and decorated over centuries and open for guided tours year-round. The compact historic centre rewards leisurely exploration, with its old gate, thermal spa facilities, and surrounding Limburg countryside offering gentle walking and cycling routes. Nearby Maastricht, with its grand Vrijthof square and Burgundian character, makes an easy day trip by train.

History & Culture

Valkenburg aan de Geul is one of the oldest towns in the Netherlands, with roots stretching to the early medieval period. Its strategic position on a rocky outcrop above the Geul river made it a natural fortification site, and the castle that dominated the town played a significant role in Low Countries history before being largely destroyed in the late seventeenth century. The town's distinctive character stems from its soft marl limestone geology, which allowed residents to carve cellars, chapels, and passages directly into the hillside over generations. Valkenburg reinvented itself as a leisure destination in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, drawing visitors from across the Netherlands and neighbouring countries to its spa facilities and scenic valley setting.

Valkenburg is home to the Netherlands' oldest Christmas markets, held annually inside its ancient marl caves since the mid-twentieth century. The Kerstmarkt in de Grotten has grown into a beloved seasonal tradition, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. The unique underground setting, with its constant cool temperature and candlelit passages, creates an intimate atmosphere that distinguishes Valkenburg from open-air Christmas markets across Europe.
