Nestled beneath the ancient castle ruins of Valkenburg, the Kerststad Valkenburg – Fluweelengrot Christmas market transforms centuries-old marl stone tunnels into an enchanting underground winter wonderland. Each year, the winding yellow-stone corridors of the Fluweelengrot (Velvet Cave) are adorned with hundreds of twinkling lights, richly decorated stalls, and festive décor that turns this historic cave into one of the most atmospheric Christmas markets in the Netherlands. Visitors wander through the intimate, candlelit passages discovering cozy vendor stalls offering handcrafted gifts, seasonal decorations, and locally inspired keepsakes. The cave's natural architecture — carved from soft marl stone over centuries — creates a uniquely warm and sheltered setting unlike any open-air market. The underground environment maintains a constant cool temperature, adding to the magical, otherworldly atmosphere. Alongside the Fluweelengrot, Valkenburg's broader Christmas Town experience includes the nearby Gemeentegrot (Municipal Cave), home to Europe's largest underground Christmas market, as well as above-ground festivities, the award-winning Christmas parade, Santa's Village, and the Route d'Amuse culinary trail.
