Plan Your Visit to Cologne

Getting There

Cologne Bonn Airport connects the city to major European destinations. The central train station (Hauptbahnhof) provides frequent high-speed rail links to German cities and neighboring countries, with excellent connections throughout the region. The station sits directly beside the cathedral in the heart of the old town, making arrival exceptionally convenient. Well-maintained motorways connect Cologne to the broader Rhine region for those traveling by car.

Where to Stay

The Altstadt (old town) and areas near the cathedral place visitors within walking distance of major attractions and riverside promenades. The Belgian Quarter offers a more residential feel with boutique hotels and cafés, while remaining easily accessible to the city center. Accommodations span all budget ranges throughout the city.

Other Attractions

The Cologne Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Gothic masterpiece, dominates the skyline and remains one of Germany's most visited landmarks. The Romano-Germanic Museum explores the city's Roman foundations, while the Museum Ludwig houses a significant modern art collection. Traditional brewhouses serve Kölsch, the city's distinctive pale beer, in an atmosphere that defines local culture. The old town along the Rhine offers picturesque streets for exploration, and nearby destinations like Bonn and the Rhine Valley castles make rewarding day trips.

History & Culture

Founded by the Romans as Colonia in 50 CE, Cologne became one of the most important cities of the Holy Roman Empire and a major center of medieval trade along the Rhine. The city's strategic position made it a wealthy hub of commerce and religion, with construction of its famous cathedral beginning in 1248, though completion took over six centuries. Cologne's tradition as a Catholic stronghold shaped its cultural calendar, with religious festivals deeply woven into civic life. Despite severe destruction during World War II, the cathedral miraculously survived, and the city rebuilt itself while preserving its historical character.

Christmas Market History: Cologne's Christmas market tradition dates back centuries, rooted in medieval winter fairs where craftsmen sold goods before the holiday season. The markets evolved from simple trading gatherings into festive celebrations reflecting the city's religious heritage and Rhineland customs. Today, Cologne hosts multiple themed markets that honor this legacy, each offering distinct atmospheres from traditional wooden stalls to specialized artisan showcases, making the city one of Germany's premier Christmas destinations.
