Getting There

Split Airport, located approximately 25 kilometres west of the city centre, offers seasonal and year-round connections to major European hubs. The city is accessible by ferry from Adriatic islands and Italian ports, and by intercity bus and train services to Zagreb and other Croatian cities. The Adriatic Highway provides a scenic driving route from neighbouring countries.

Where to Stay

Staying within or near Diocletian's Palace places visitors at the heart of the old town and within walking distance of central attractions. The Manuš and Veli Varoš neighbourhoods, just inland from the waterfront, offer a quieter residential atmosphere while remaining close to main sites.

Other Attractions

Diocletian's Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site, dominates the old town with ancient stone corridors now housing cafés, galleries, and local businesses. The Meštrović Gallery, set in a grand villa on the western waterfront, displays works by Croatia's most celebrated sculptor. The Riva promenade offers an evening gathering spot with palm trees and harbour views. Day trips to the nearby islands of Brač and Hvar, or to the historic town of Trogir, are easily arranged.

History & Culture

Split's origins trace to one of antiquity's most remarkable building projects: the retirement palace constructed by Roman Emperor Diocletian around 300 AD. After the empire's decline, the palace walls became a city themselves as inhabitants moved in and transformed imperial halls and temples into homes, churches, and public spaces. This layering of civilisations—Roman, medieval Croatian, Venetian, and Ottoman-influenced—gives Split an unusually rich historical character. The city grew into a significant Adriatic trading port under Venetian rule and later became part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, each era leaving its architectural mark. Today, Split is Croatia's second-largest city and a vibrant hub balancing ancient heritage with contemporary life. Winter reveals a quieter side when locals reclaim the old town's squares and stone streets take on a more atmospheric quality.
