Plan Your Visit to Wroclaw

Getting There

Wroclaw Copernicus Airport connects the city to major European destinations, located about 10 kilometers from the center with bus and taxi services available. The city benefits from excellent rail connections to Warsaw, Krakow, and Poznan, with the main station situated near the Old Town. Wroclaw's position near the Czech and German borders makes it a natural hub for exploring Central Europe.

Where to Stay

The Old Town and surrounding areas near the Market Square offer convenient access to major attractions, with hotels and guesthouses housed in restored historic buildings. The Nadodrze district, just west of the center, provides more budget-friendly accommodation options while remaining within easy walking distance of the main sights.

Other Attractions

The Market Square ranks among Europe's largest medieval town squares, featuring colorful burgher houses and the Gothic Old Town Hall with its astronomical clock. Ostrow Tumski, the Cathedral Island, offers atmospheric cobbled streets and historic churches. The city is known for its whimsical dwarf statues scattered throughout the streets, creating an engaging urban exploration experience. The Panorama of Raclawice, a monumental 19th-century cycloramic painting, and the Centennial Hall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, provide significant cultural attractions.

History & Culture

Wroclaw's history reflects centuries of shifting borders and cultural influences, having been part of the Kingdom of Poland, Bohemia, the Habsburg Empire, Prussia, and Germany before returning to Poland after World War II. Founded over a thousand years ago, the city flourished as a trading center on the Oder River, its wealth evident in the magnificent architecture of the Market Square and island churches. The city's German name, Breslau, was used throughout much of its modern history until 1945, when it became Polish Wroclaw and was rebuilt from extensive wartime destruction.

This complex heritage has created a distinctive cultural blend, with Gothic, Baroque, and Art Nouveau buildings standing alongside postwar reconstruction. Christmas market traditions in Wroclaw draw on centuries-old Central European customs from both Polish and German cultures. The markets were significantly expanded after 1989, transforming the Market Square into one of Poland's most atmospheric winter destinations, honoring historical craft traditions while incorporating contemporary Polish Christmas customs.
