Wroclaw's history reflects centuries of shifting borders and cultural influences, having been part of the Kingdom of Poland, Bohemia, the Habsburg Empire, Prussia, and Germany before returning to Poland after World War II. Founded over a thousand years ago, the city flourished as a trading center on the Oder River, its wealth evident in the magnificent architecture of the Market Square and island churches. The city's German name, Breslau, was used throughout much of its modern history until 1945, when it became Polish Wroclaw and was rebuilt from extensive wartime destruction.
This complex heritage has created a distinctive cultural blend, with Gothic, Baroque, and Art Nouveau buildings standing alongside postwar reconstruction. Christmas market traditions in Wroclaw draw on centuries-old Central European customs from both Polish and German cultures. The markets were significantly expanded after 1989, transforming the Market Square into one of Poland's most atmospheric winter destinations, honoring historical craft traditions while incorporating contemporary Polish Christmas customs.
