Plan Your Visit to Florence

Getting There

Florence is served by Amerigo Vespucci Airport, with connections to major European hubs. Santa Maria Novella railway station offers frequent high-speed train service from Rome, Milan, Venice, and other Italian cities. The city is also accessible by car via major highways connecting Tuscany to the rest of Italy.

Where to Stay

The historic center, particularly around Piazza della Repubblica and Santa Maria Novella, places visitors within walking distance of major attractions. The Oltrarno neighborhood offers a more residential feel while remaining close to cultural landmarks. Accommodation ranges from historic palazzos converted to hotels to family-run guesthouses in medieval buildings.

Other Attractions

Florence houses some of Europe's greatest Renaissance art and architecture, including the Uffizi Gallery, Accademia Gallery with Michelangelo's David, and the iconic Duomo. The Ponte Vecchio, Palazzo Pitti, and Boboli Gardens provide striking settings for exploration. The Oltrarno district offers a quieter atmosphere with artisan workshops and authentic neighborhood character. Day trips to the Chianti wine region, Siena, San Gimignano, and Pisa are easily arranged. Traditional trattorias throughout the historic center serve Tuscan cuisine.

History & Culture

Florence rose to prominence in the Middle Ages as a prosperous banking and trading center, becoming the cradle of the Renaissance under Medici patronage. The city's artistic flowering from the 14th through 16th centuries produced masterpieces by Dante, Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, and Michelangelo that shaped Western culture. The compact medieval street plan and preserved palaces and churches create an atmospheric setting, with golden stone facades glowing under winter light. Florence's tradition of craftsmanship in leather, gold, and textiles has endured for centuries, making it a destination for quality artisan goods. The city's Christmas celebrations emphasize nativity scenes, religious observances, and seasonal foods like panettone and roasted chestnuts, reflecting its deep Catholic heritage and Tuscan culinary traditions.
