Plan Your Visit to Gubbio

Getting There

Gubbio is best reached by car, as it sits in the Apennine foothills of Umbria without a direct rail connection. The nearest major airports are in Perugia and Florence, both within reasonable driving distance. Visitors traveling by train typically arrive in Perugia and continue by bus or taxi into town.

Where to Stay

Staying within the historic walled center puts visitors within easy walking distance of the main piazzas and medieval core. Small hotels and agriturismi in and around the old town offer characterful bases, while the surrounding countryside provides quieter options for those preferring to drive in daily.

Other Attractions

The medieval Palazzo dei Consoli dominates the main square and houses an archaeological museum with the Eugubine Tablets — ancient bronze inscriptions that illuminate pre-Roman Umbrian civilization. The Roman Theatre on the town's edge remains impressively intact, offering a striking sense of Gubbio's ancient past. A funicular ride ascends to the Basilica of Sant'Ubaldo, rewarding visitors with sweeping views over the rooftops and surrounding hills. Gubbio's artisan ceramics tradition is worth exploring, with local workshops producing distinctive majolica-style pieces.

History & Culture

Gubbio is one of Umbria's oldest and best-preserved medieval towns, with roots stretching back to the Umbri people of pre-Roman Italy. The Eugubine Tablets, discovered here in the fifteenth century, remain among the most important surviving documents of ancient Italic civilization. Under medieval rule, Gubbio flourished as an independent commune before passing to the Montefeltro family of Urbino, who left a lasting architectural and cultural imprint on the region. The town's steep stone streets, towers, and civic palaces have changed remarkably little over the centuries, giving Gubbio an atmosphere of genuine antiquity.

Gubbio is perhaps most famous in Italy for its extraordinary Christmas illumination — the hillside of Monte Ingino is outlined each December with thousands of lights arranged in the shape of a massive Christmas tree, a tradition recognized by Guinness World Records. This spectacle, organized by local volunteers since the early 1980s, has become a defining symbol of the town's festive season and draws visitors from across Italy and beyond. The illumination is switched on in early December and remains lit through Epiphany.
