Getting There

Dresden Airport connects to major European cities, with the S-Bahn train reaching the city center in approximately 20 minutes. The city benefits from excellent rail connections, with frequent trains from Berlin, Prague, and other German cities arriving at Dresden Hauptbahnhof. Major motorways link Dresden to Berlin, Leipzig, and the Czech border for those traveling by car.

Where to Stay

The Altstadt (old town) places visitors within walking distance of major attractions and market squares, with accommodation ranging from historic hotels to modern chains. The Neustadt district across the river offers a bohemian atmosphere with independent shops, cafes, and restaurants, easily accessible to the city center via bridges and tram lines.

Other Attractions

The Zwinger palace complex houses world-class art collections, including the Old Masters Picture Gallery featuring Raphael's Sistine Madonna. The reconstructed Frauenkirche stands as a symbol of reconciliation, while the Semperoper opera house offers exceptional performances in a stunning baroque setting. The Green Vault treasury displays one of Europe's most magnificent collections of precious objects. Brühl's Terrace provides sweeping views over the Elbe River, and Saxon Switzerland National Park nearby features dramatic sandstone formations and hiking trails.

History & Culture

Dresden rose to prominence as Saxony's capital under Augustus the Strong in the early 18th century, when the Elector transformed it into a baroque masterpiece. The city earned its reputation as the 'Florence on the Elbe' through architectural splendor and cultural sophistication. Devastated by Allied bombing in February 1945, Dresden lost much of its historic center, but decades of reconstruction have restored many beloved landmarks. Today the city honors both its baroque heritage and complex 20th-century history, embodying resilience and cultural continuity.

Christmas Market History: Dresden's Striezelmarkt claims to be Germany's oldest Christmas market, with documented origins dating to 1434. The market takes its name from the Striezel, an early form of the Stollen fruit bread that remains a Dresden specialty. Over nearly six centuries, the tradition has evolved from a simple meat market into a weeks-long celebration featuring the world's largest Christmas pyramid and the annual Stollenfest parade.
