Getting There

Potsdam is easily reached via Berlin Brandenburg Airport, with regional train connections to Potsdam's main station in under an hour. History & Culture

Potsdam's origins stretch back over a thousand years, but the city rose to prominence in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as the preferred royal residence of the Hohenzollern dynasty. Under Frederick the Great, Potsdam was transformed into a city of palaces and grand civic architecture intended to rival the great courts of Europe. The construction of Sanssouci Palace in the 1740s gave the city its most enduring symbol—a place of personal retreat and Enlightenment culture. The city's layered history continued into the twentieth century, most notably when Cecilienhof Palace hosted the Potsdam Conference of 1945. Today, Potsdam's Christmas markets draw on this royal and Baroque heritage, with seasonal celebrations centered around historic squares and palace grounds.
