Getting There

Potsdam is easily reached via Berlin Brandenburg Airport, with regional train connections to Potsdam's main station in under an hour. From central Berlin, frequent S-Bahn and regional train services make the journey straightforward, typically taking 30 to 40 minutes. The city is well connected to the German motorway network via routes leading southwest from Berlin.

Where to Stay

The city center, particularly around the Old Market Square and Dutch Quarter, places visitors within easy walking distance of Potsdam's main cultural sites. A range of hotels, boutique guesthouses, and apartments cater to different budgets in these central neighborhoods. Those preferring a quieter base can find comfortable options near Sanssouci park, with good transport links into the city.

Other Attractions

Potsdam's greatest draw is its extraordinary ensemble of royal palaces and landscaped gardens. Sanssouci Palace, Frederick the Great's celebrated summer retreat, sits at the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The New Palace and Cecilienhof Palace add further architectural significance, while the Dutch Quarter's charming brick townhouses showcase distinctive urban design. The Barberini Museum houses an impressive collection of Impressionist and modern art. The surrounding Havel lakes and forested parkland make Potsdam rewarding for walks between cultural highlights.

History & Culture

Potsdam's origins stretch back over a thousand years, but the city rose to prominence in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as the preferred royal residence of the Hohenzollern dynasty. Under Frederick the Great, Potsdam was transformed into a city of palaces and grand civic architecture intended to rival the great courts of Europe. The construction of Sanssouci Palace in the 1740s gave the city its most enduring symbol—a place of personal retreat and Enlightenment culture. The city's layered history continued into the twentieth century, most notably when Cecilienhof Palace hosted the Potsdam Conference of 1945. Today, Potsdam's Christmas markets draw on this royal and Baroque heritage, with seasonal celebrations centered around historic squares and palace grounds.
