Plan Your Visit to Braunschweig

Getting There

Braunschweig is well connected by rail, with frequent intercity services to Hanover, Hamburg, and Berlin. Hanover Airport, approximately 60 kilometres west, offers international connections with onward rail and road access to the city. The A2 motorway provides direct road access from east and west.

Where to Stay

Accommodation in the Innenstadt, the city centre, places visitors within walking distance of the main squares and historic landmarks. A range of hotels, from business-oriented properties to smaller boutique options, is concentrated near the central station, providing convenient access during peak seasons.

Other Attractions

The historic centre is anchored by Dankwarderode Castle and Brunswick Cathedral, where Henry the Lion, the city's medieval founder, is buried. The Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum houses one of Germany's oldest public art collections, spanning old masters to decorative arts. The Burgplatz, the medieval square at the heart of the old town, is framed by centuries of civic architecture and remains one of the most atmospheric public spaces in Lower Saxony. The surrounding region offers easy access to Wolfsburg and the Harz Mountains for day trips.

History & Culture

Braunschweig, known in English as Brunswick, traces its origins to at least the tenth century and rose to prominence under Henry the Lion, the powerful Duke of Saxony and Bavaria, who made it his principal residence in the twelfth century. The bronze lion statue he erected on the Burgplatz around 1166 is considered one of the oldest free-standing sculptures in medieval Germany and remains a civic symbol. The city flourished as a member of the Hanseatic League and developed a strong tradition of craftsmanship and trade that shaped its character for centuries.

Braunschweig suffered significant destruction during the Second World War, but much of its historic core has been carefully restored, preserving the medieval street pattern and key monuments. The city's Christmas market tradition stretches back centuries, rooted in the broader German custom of Advent gatherings for trade and community celebration. Centred on the Burgplatz and surrounding historic squares, the market takes advantage of the dramatic backdrop of the cathedral and castle to create one of the most visually distinctive market settings in northern Germany.
