The Braunschweiger Weihnachtsmarkt is one of Germany's most historically rooted Christmas markets, tracing its origins back to 1505 — over 500 years of unbroken tradition in the heart of Lower Saxony. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Dom St. Blasii cathedral and the medieval Dankwarderode Castle on the Burgplatz, the market transforms Braunschweig's historic city center into a glowing winter wonderland each year from late November through December 29. Around 140 lovingly decorated stalls line the illuminated ensemble, offering an impressive range of artisan crafts, handmade gifts, and regional culinary specialties. Food lovers can savor Braunkohl (a traditional North German kale dish), Mumme-Glühwein — a unique mulled wine brewed with Braunschweig's historic Mumme malt extract — flame-grilled salmon, Hungarian Kaminstriezel pastries, handmade Käsespätzle, and freshly roasted nuts. Shoppers will find everything from Erzgebirge wooden crafts and Käthe Wohlfahrt collectibles to alpaca wool goods and artisan jewelry. The market is equally celebrated for its free children's and cultural program, including theatrical performances and festive concerts. Adventurous visitors can climb the 61-meter town hall tower for a panoramic view over the sea of lights below. Unique to this market are the covered wooden rafts (Stehflöße) moored in the historic Burggraben moat — a beloved gathering spot for groups. Sustainability is a genuine priority here: the market has run entirely on renewable energy since 2016, uses reusable cups since 2017, eliminated single-use plastics in 2019, and partners with the Foodsharing association to reduce food waste. Arrive by tram or bus to the Rathaus or Schloss stops for the easiest access.
