Zagreb's origins trace to two medieval settlements: Kaptol, the ecclesiastical center founded in 1094, and Gradec, the free royal town established in 1242. These communities developed separately on neighboring hills until merging in 1850 to form modern Zagreb. Under Austro-Hungarian rule, the city expanded with grand boulevards, parks, and distinctive yellow-painted buildings that define the Lower Town's Central European character today.
The city's Advent celebration gained prominence in the early 2000s as a coordinated festival across multiple locations. Zagreb's Christmas markets earned international recognition, becoming a major European winter destination and establishing the city as a premier seasonal attraction. The tradition combines Central European market customs with Croatian elements, including local crafts, regional foods, and live music performances throughout the Advent season.
