Advent in the Tunnel at Grič Tunnel offers one of Zagreb's most unique Christmas experiences, transforming a historic World War II bomb shelter into an enchanting winter wonderland. Located in the heart of Zagreb's Upper Town, this pedestrian tunnel connects Mesnička Street and Rićeva Street, providing visitors with an immersive journey through a magical polar landscape. The 2024 installation, inspired by Chris Van Allsburg's beloved book 'The Polar Express,' features stunning visual elements including holographic polar animals, glowing icebergs, and mesmerizing aurora borealis light displays that dance across the tunnel's ceiling. Created by acclaimed visual artists Anja Leko, Andrej Beštak, and Jelena Petrić, the exhibition showcases oversized interactive installations that transport visitors back to childhood wonder. A mechanical train circles continuously through a fantastical castle with a dome, while ambient soundscapes of wind and train whistles enhance the polar atmosphere. The tunnel maintains a comfortable temperature of around 10°C (50°F), making it a perfect escape from winter weather while still feeling festive. Visitors follow a one-way route through the 350-meter tunnel, with the walk taking approximately 5-10 minutes at a leisurely pace, though most guests linger longer to photograph the enchanting displays. Best visited during morning hours to avoid crowds, this free attraction has become a beloved highlight of Zagreb's award-winning Advent celebration.
