Explore the magical atmosphere of Budapest's Christmas markets

Budapest as a unified city dates only to 1873, when the royal seat of Buda and Óbuda on the western bank merged with commercial Pest on the east. The area's roots run far deeper, from the Roman settlement of Aquincum through centuries of Hungarian kings, Ottoman occupation, and Habsburg rule. The late 19th and early 20th centuries brought the grand boulevards, bridges, and Art Nouveau architecture that define the cityscape today. Despite devastation in World War II and decades under communist rule, Budapest has reclaimed its role as the cultural heart of Central Europe.
Christmas markets became prominent after 1989, when Western European festive customs were embraced with renewed enthusiasm. Vörösmarty Square has hosted the city's main market since the mid-1990s, drawing on older Hungarian winter fair traditions while incorporating the wooden chalet aesthetic of Germanic Christmas markets.
