Getting There

Luxembourg City is served by Luxembourg Airport, a compact international hub with direct connections to major European cities. The central railway station connects the city to Paris, Brussels, and other regional capitals by train, making it a natural stop on a broader European itinerary. By road, Luxembourg sits at the crossroads of Belgium, France, and Germany, accessible for visitors arriving by car.

Where to Stay

The Old Town places visitors within walking distance of historic sights, with hotels suited to different budgets concentrated around Place d'Armes and surrounding streets. The Gare district, near the main railway station, offers more affordable options and convenient access to public transport.

Other Attractions

The UNESCO-listed Old Town and its dramatic fortifications—known as the Bock Casemates—offer insight into the city's military heritage, with underground galleries carved into sandstone cliffs. The Grand Ducal Palace, situated in the historic quarter, is a striking example of Renaissance architecture and remains an active royal residence. The Mudam (Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean) and the Philharmonie Luxembourg are architecturally distinguished venues anchoring the Kirchberg cultural district. The Grund, a picturesque valley neighborhood below the old city walls, features riverside cafés and medieval character worth exploring on foot.

History & Culture

Luxembourg City's origins trace to 963 AD, when Count Siegfried of the Ardennes built a fortified castle on a rocky promontory above the Alzette River. The site grew into one of Europe's most formidable strongholds, controlled successively by the Habsburgs, Spanish, French, and Prussians. Its extensive fortifications earned it the nickname 'Gibraltar of the North.' Following the Treaty of London in 1867, Luxembourg was declared neutral and its fortifications were largely dismantled, transforming the city from military bastion into a modern European capital. The remaining ramparts and casemates are preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Luxembourg City's winter market tradition centers on Place d'Armes and the surrounding Old Town, where festive stalls and illuminations have drawn visitors for decades. The market reflects the city's position at the cultural crossroads of French, German, and Luxembourgish traditions, blending culinary and craft influences from all three. Over time it has grown into one of the more refined Christmas markets in the Benelux region, known for its intimate scale and historic architectural backdrop.
