Plan Your Visit to Graz

Getting There

Graz Airport, located south of the city, offers connections to major European hubs. The city is well-served by rail, with frequent trains from Vienna taking approximately two and a half hours, plus connections from Salzburg, Munich, and Ljubljana. Graz sits at the junction of major motorways linking Austria, Slovenia, and Italy, making it easily accessible by car from across the region.

Where to Stay

The Altstadt, or old town, places visitors within walking distance of major sights, with accommodation ranging from boutique guesthouses to larger hotels. The Lend and Gries districts, just across the Mur River, offer good value and easy access to the center via bridges and trams. Staying near Hauptplatz or Herrengasse positions you at the heart of the historic core.

Other Attractions

The Schlossberg, a tree-covered hill rising above the old town, offers panoramic views and is reached by funicular, stairs, or a glass lift built into the rock. The historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, showcases Renaissance courtyards, the late Gothic double spiral staircase at the Burg, and the distinctive Kunsthaus contemporary art museum with its striking blue architecture. Graz is renowned for its culinary scene, particularly pumpkin seed oil from the surrounding Styrian countryside, and its traditional taverns and modern restaurants. Day trips to the wine roads of southern Styria or nearby thermal spa towns are easily arranged.

History & Culture

Graz grew from a Roman settlement into a strategic fortress town, its name derived from the Slavic word for small castle. The city flourished under Habsburg rule, becoming a residence of the imperial family in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, leaving a legacy of grand architecture and courtly culture. As the capital of Styria, Graz developed a distinct identity blending Austrian, Italian, and Slovenian influences, visible in its arcaded courtyards and red-tiled rooftops. The city's university, founded in the late sixteenth century, fostered a tradition of learning and innovation that continues today.

Graz has celebrated Advent markets for several centuries, with traditions rooted in the region's Catholic heritage and winter trade fairs. The main market on Hauptplatz has evolved into a centerpiece of December festivities, featuring Styrian crafts and regional delicacies that reflect the area's artisan heritage.
