Getting There

Varaždin is most conveniently reached by road or rail from Zagreb, approximately 80 kilometres to the south. Direct train and bus connections from Zagreb make the journey straightforward, typically taking under two hours. The city is also accessible by road from Austria and Slovenia via well-maintained cross-border routes through northern Croatia.

Where to Stay

The compact old town centre is the most practical base for visitors, placing guests within easy walking distance of the main squares and historic streets. A range of smaller hotels and guesthouses in and around the historic core offer comfortable accommodation with local character. The city's modest size means nowhere in the centre is far from the heart of the action.

Other Attractions

Varaždin is celebrated for its remarkably well-preserved Baroque architecture. A stroll through the pedestrianised old town reveals ornate palaces, churches, and townhouses that earned it the informal title of Croatia's Baroque capital. Varaždin Castle, which houses the City Museum, is one of the finest examples of a water-fortified Renaissance castle in the region. The city's cemetery, designed as a landscaped park, is considered one of the most beautiful in Central Europe. The annual Baroque Evenings music festival reflects the city's deep connection to classical European culture.

History & Culture

Varaždin's origins stretch back to the medieval period, when it developed as a fortified settlement along important trade and military routes in the Pannonian lowlands of northern Croatia. It served as the capital of Croatia during the eighteenth century, a status that spurred an ambitious programme of Baroque construction and gave the city the architectural grandeur it retains today. A devastating fire in 1776 cut short its role as capital, after which Zagreb assumed that position. Varaždin continued to flourish as a prosperous regional centre with a strong civic identity. The city's German-influenced cultural heritage, legacy of Habsburg rule, and tradition of civic pride have all contributed to a distinctly Central European atmosphere. Varaždin's Advent season has grown into one of the most acclaimed in Croatia, drawing on the city's Baroque setting and Central European heritage to create a festive atmosphere. The market tradition builds on the city's long history of public celebration in its grand squares and colonnaded streets, and has gained national and international recognition.
