Plan Your Visit to Verona

Getting There

Verona is served by Valerio Catullo Airport, approximately 10 kilometers from the city center with connections to major European cities. The city sits on the Milan-Venice railway line, providing easy access by train from across northern Italy and beyond. Drivers will find Verona well-connected via the A4 and A22 motorways.

Where to Stay

The historic center within the river bend offers the most atmospheric base, with easy walking access to major sights. Areas near Piazza Bra and Piazza delle Erbe place visitors at the heart of the action, while the Veronetta district across the Adige River provides quieter, more affordable options still within comfortable reach of the center.

Other Attractions

Verona's Roman Arena, a remarkably preserved first-century amphitheater in Piazza Bra, hosts world-class opera performances throughout the year. Juliet's House draws visitors to its famous balcony, while the medieval Castelvecchio fortress houses an impressive art museum. The historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage site, rewards exploration with Romanesque churches, elegant piazzas, and traditional osterias serving local specialties like risotto all'Amarone and pastissada de caval. The nearby Valpolicella wine region offers excellent day-trip opportunities for tastings of Amarone and Ripasso wines.

History & Culture

Founded as a Roman colony in the first century BCE, Verona flourished at the crossroads of major trade routes connecting Italy to northern Europe. The city's golden age under the della Scala family in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries left a legacy of Gothic palaces, fortified bridges, and elegant towers that still define its skyline. Shakespeare immortalized Verona as the setting for Romeo and Juliet, forever linking the city to romance in the popular imagination. Centuries of Venetian rule followed, adding Renaissance splendor to the medieval core before Verona became part of unified Italy in 1866.

Christmas markets have gathered in Piazza dei Signori for several decades, where wooden chalets create a festive atmosphere in the shadow of Dante's statue and medieval palaces. The markets blend Alpine chalet aesthetics with Italian traditions, reflecting the city's position near the Austrian border and its unique cultural heritage.
