Getting There

Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, located about 18 kilometers north of the city center, is Finland's main international gateway with connections throughout Europe. The airport connects to the city center via bus service in approximately 30 minutes. Travelers from other Nordic countries often arrive by ferry from Stockholm or Tallinn, while domestic trains connect Helsinki to major Finnish cities from the central railway station.

Where to Stay

The compact city center around Esplanadi Park and Senate Square places visitors within walking distance of major attractions. The Kamppi and Kluuvi districts offer excellent public transport connections and diverse accommodation options, from international chains to boutique hotels. Staying near the central railway station provides convenient access to city sights and onward travel.

Other Attractions

The neoclassical Senate Square and its white Lutheran Cathedral form Helsinki's architectural heart. The UNESCO-listed Suomenlinna sea fortress offers a maritime excursion accessible by short ferry ride. Design enthusiasts explore the Design District's boutiques and the striking Temppeliaukio Church, built directly into solid rock. Finnish sauna culture thrives at traditional public saunas throughout the city. The food scene showcases Nordic ingredients in Michelin-starred restaurants and casual cafés serving traditional dishes like salmon soup. The Ateneum Art Museum and Kiasma contemporary art museum provide cultural experiences year-round.

History & Culture

Founded in 1550 by Swedish King Gustav I, Helsinki remained a modest trading town until 1812, when it became the capital of the Grand Duchy of Finland under Russian rule. This elevation prompted Tsar Alexander I to commission German architect Carl Ludvig Engel to design the neoclassical core that defines Helsinki's character today. The Senate Square ensemble, completed in the mid-19th century, reflects this imperial vision while incorporating Nordic sensibilities. Finland gained independence in 1917, and Helsinki evolved into a showcase of Nordic modernism and functionalist design throughout the 20th century.

Christmas markets have gathered on Senate Square for several decades, with festive stalls set beneath the cathedral's steps and surrounding historic buildings. The tradition blends Finnish winter customs with broader European market culture, emphasizing local handicrafts, warming beverages, and seasonal foods. The neoclassical backdrop creates an elegant setting that has made these December markets a beloved tradition for locals and visitors.
