Where to Stay

The city center and the area around the Aura River provide the most convenient base, placing visitors within easy walking distance of the main cultural sites. A range of hotels, from business-oriented properties to boutique options, is concentrated in the downtown core, ensuring good access to Turku's compact and walkable heart.

Other Attractions

Turku Castle, one of Finland's oldest and largest medieval fortresses, stands at the mouth of the Aura River and merits a visit in any season. The Turku Cathedral, the spiritual heart of the Finnish Lutheran Church, dominates the city skyline and carries centuries of national significance. The banks of the Aura River are lined with museum ships, restaurants, and cultural venues, creating a lively waterfront character. The nearby Turku Archipelago, accessible by ferry, offers striking natural landscapes that reward day-trippers with quiet island scenery.

History & Culture

Turku is Finland's oldest city, founded in the thirteenth century where the Aura River meets the sea. It served as the country's capital and most important urban center for several centuries, its position as a trading hub and episcopal seat giving it outsized cultural and political influence. A devastating fire in 1827 destroyed much of the old town, prompting the transfer of the capital to Helsinki. Turku rebuilt and preserved its identity as a center of learning, culture, and maritime commerce. The city is home to two universities and maintains a bilingual Finnish and Swedish character reflecting the region's deep historical ties to Scandinavia. Turku hosts one of Finland's most traditional Christmas markets on the Old Great Square, a seasonal institution drawing on the city's long history as a commercial and civic gathering place. The medieval street plan and cathedral setting lend the market an authenticity that connects modern celebrations to centuries-old trading heritage.
