Explore the magical atmosphere of Hannover's Christmas markets

Hannover began as a small settlement on the River Leine, growing through the medieval period into a prosperous trading town. The city gained considerable prominence in the 17th and 18th centuries when the House of Hanover produced George I, the first Hanover-born British monarch, forging a dynastic link between this north German city and the English crown. This royal heritage shaped Hannover's architecture and cultural ambitions, most visibly in the Herrenhäuser Gärten. Extensive bomb damage during the Second World War led to postwar reconstruction in a functional style, though several historic landmarks were carefully restored. Today Hannover is known internationally as a trade fair city while maintaining a strong civic identity rooted in its long history. The city's Christmas market tradition draws on the broader German Advent custom of outdoor winter markets. The central market, held around the Marktkirche and Old Town Hall, has long been one of the most atmospheric in Lower Saxony, using the medieval church as a backdrop. Over decades the market has expanded across several city centre locations, blending craft stalls and seasonal food with a festive programme of music and events.

Lovingly decorated huts create a fairytale atmosphere, with highlights including a historic Ferris wheel and spectacular light projections three times daily that illuminate the station facade in a festive glow. This market runs longer than the Old Town market, extending until December 30.
