Weihnachtsmarkt Hannover

The Weihnachtsmarkt Hannover is one of Lower Saxony's most expansive Christmas markets, transforming the entire historic Altstadt into a series of distinct, immersive themed zones that reward exploration at every turn. Stretching from Platz der Weltausstellung along Grupenstraße and Marktkirche to the Leineufer and Ballhofplatz, the market encompasses around 190 stalls spread across four unique areas, each with its own character and atmosphere. At the heart of the market, the traditional zone around Marktkirche draws visitors with classic Christmas stalls beneath the glow of a towering 19-meter Nordmann fir adorned with 3,000 lights and 1.5 kilometers of string lights. Ballhofplatz becomes a Finnish Christmas Village complete with an authentic Lappish tent serving Flammlachs (flame-grilled salmon) and Glögi, Finnish mulled wine. The Wunschbrunnenwald at Holzmarkt transforms into a real pine forest of 50 decorated firs surrounding the historic Oskar-Winter-Brunnen, where legend holds that turning the wrought-iron wishing ring grants your wish. The medieval Historisches Weihnachtsdorf along the Leine river features live craft workshops, artisan demonstrations, and nightly fire shows at 6pm and 8pm. Families will find plenty to enjoy, including a Kasperle puppet theatre, a children's Christmas bakery, carousel rides, and daily visits from Santa at 5:30pm. Regional food specialties include Schmalzkuchen (fried dough balls dusted with powdered sugar), Grünkohl mit Bregenwurst (kale with regional sausage), and heißer Met (hot mead). Admission is free throughout, and the market is accessible by U-Bahn to Markthalle/Landtag.
