The Wunschbrunnenwald (Wishing Well Forest) at Holzmarkt is one of the most enchanting and distinctive zones of the Hannover Christmas Market, transforming a historic square in the Altstadt into an immersive pine forest experience. Set in front of the Renaissance Leibnizhaus, this intimate market zone features over 50 decorated fir trees spread across approximately 400 square meters, creating a fragrant woodland atmosphere unlike anything found at typical German Christmas markets. At the heart of the Wunschbrunnenwald stands the Oskar-Winter-Brunnen, a historic fountain whose ornate wrought-iron grille holds the legendary Wunschring — a wishing ring that, according to local legend, grants wishes to those who turn it. The combination of towering firs, soft atmospheric lighting after dark, and the scent of fresh pine makes this spot equally magical by day and by night. Two cozy Forsthütten (forest huts) serve warm food and drinks, offering a sheltered retreat within the trees. The Holzmarkt zone is part of the broader Weihnachtsmarkt Hannover, which runs from late November through December 22 and spans several distinct themed areas across the Altstadt, including a Finnish village on Ballhofplatz and a medieval market along the Leine river. With around 188 total stalls citywide, the overall market is large in scale but the Wunschbrunnenwald remains its most talked-about and photographed feature. Admission to the entire market is free.
