Explore the magical atmosphere of Nancy's Christmas markets

Nancy rose to prominence as the capital of the Duchy of Lorraine, a strategically positioned territory that shaped northeastern France for centuries. The city reached its peak under Stanisław Leszczyński, the exiled King of Poland who became Duke of Lorraine in the eighteenth century. His urban projects, particularly the ensemble of interconnected squares including the Place Stanislas, transformed Nancy into one of Europe's finest examples of baroque town planning. When Lorraine was incorporated into France in 1766, Nancy retained its status as a regional capital and later became a center of the Art Nouveau movement. This layered heritage—royal, artistic, and distinctly Lorrainer—gives the city considerable character.
Nancy's Christmas market tradition is rooted in the broader Lorraine regional culture of Advent celebrations. The market centered on the Place Stanislas has become one of northeastern France's most visually striking seasonal events, with the baroque square's illuminated facades and gilded gates providing an exceptional backdrop. The event features local crafts, regional gastronomy, and seasonal entertainment, drawing visitors from across France and neighboring countries.

A gourmet hamlet set against the backdrop of the Porte de la Craffe, Nancy's iconic medieval fortified gate and one of the oldest surviving monuments in the city. The hamlet offers festive food and drink in a historically atmospheric setting within the old town, making it one of the most picturesque of Nancy's Christmas market locations.
Located at Place Simone Veil (near the railway station, formerly known as Place Thiers), this village has been part of Nancy's Saint-Nicolas market since 2017. Known in earlier years as the Quai des Glaces, it features an open-air ice-skating rink and a selection of chalets, offering a festive atmosphere for families arriving by train or visiting the station area.
