Plan Your Visit to Celle

Getting There

Celle is most conveniently reached via Hannover, which has a major international airport with connections across Europe. From Hannover, Celle is approximately 30 minutes by train or car, making it an easy day trip or overnight destination. The city also sits close to the A7 motorway, providing straightforward access for drivers from Hamburg, Hannover, and beyond.

Where to Stay

Staying in or near the Altstadt places visitors within easy walking distance of the historic centre. A range of accommodation options, from charming guesthouses to comfortable mid-range hotels, can be found in the town centre, making it straightforward to explore Celle on foot.

Other Attractions

Celle's remarkably well-preserved Altstadt is one of the finest collections of half-timbered architecture in northern Germany, with hundreds of historic Fachwerk buildings lining its streets. The imposing Celle Palace, a Renaissance and Baroque ducal residence, offers guided tours and houses a court theatre among the oldest still in operation in Germany. The Bomann Museum provides an engaging look at Lower Saxon regional history and culture. The surrounding Lüneburg Heath offers beautiful natural landscape for walking and cycling.

History & Culture

Celle's origins date to the thirteenth century as a settlement along the Aller River in the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg. It rose to prominence as a ducal residence in the fourteenth century, and the ruling Welf dynasty left a lasting architectural and cultural imprint on the town. The city largely escaped significant damage during the Second World War, which accounts for the exceptional preservation of its historic core—a rarity among German towns of comparable age. This intact medieval and early modern fabric gives Celle an atmosphere of quiet elegance.

Celle's Christmas market takes place in and around the Altstadt, where the half-timbered buildings and illuminated palace provide an atmospheric backdrop. The market reflects the town's traditions of craftsmanship and regional Lower Saxon culture, offering visitors a more intimate and authentically local experience of the German Advent season compared to larger commercial markets in bigger cities.
