Nestled beneath centuries-old trees strung with twinkling lights, the Advent in Split – Đardin (Strossmayer Park) serves as the spiritual and ceremonial heart of Split's Christmas celebrations. This intimate garden venue sets the tone for the entire Advent season with its enchanting blend of tradition, history, and warm Dalmatian hospitality. Each Sunday of Advent, Đardin hosts the ceremonial lighting of one of four Advent candles on the grand wreath, accompanied by choral and orchestral performances from ensembles such as the Croatian National Theatre Split choir and the Croatian Navy Orchestra. The season opens on November 29 with the lighting of the first candle, the unveiling of a nativity scene by artist Neno Mikulić in the Chapel of St. Arnir, and an exhibition by the Split Ethnographic Museum exploring Christmas traditions in Split and Dalmatia. A reconstruction of the first Christmas tree adds a unique historical dimension rarely found at other Advent venues. Families with children will find Đardin particularly rewarding. The park transforms into a hub of creative workshops — from LEGO building sessions and painting classes to kamishibai storytelling and ornament-making — all designed for ages 4 to 12. Saint Nicholas and Saint Lucy both make appearances here, delighting young visitors with candy, dancing, and cheerleading performances. Outdoor cinema screenings of animated Christmas films round out the family programming. The atmosphere at this Split Christmas market location is deliberately gentle and reflective — a counterpoint to the livelier concert stages elsewhere in the city.
