Christmas Markets in Deventer

Deventer is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, with roots stretching to the eighth century when Anglo-Saxon missionary Lebuïnus established a church on the IJssel River. The city grew into a prosperous trading hub during the medieval period as a Hanseatic League member, and its wealth remains visible in the handsome brick architecture lining its historic streets. Deventer was also a significant centre of learning and printing in the fifteenth century, home to one of the earliest printing presses in the Low Countries and closely associated with the Devotio Moderna spiritual movement.

The city gained international recognition through its Dickens Festijn, held annually in December. This festival has grown into one of the largest Dickens-themed events in the world, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors. The medieval streets are reimagined as a Victorian tableau, with thousands of costumed participants bringing scenes from Charles Dickens to life.
