Explore the magical atmosphere of Esslingen am Neckar's Christmas markets

Esslingen am Neckar is one of the oldest towns in the Stuttgart region, with medieval roots. It developed into a prosperous free imperial city during the Middle Ages, gaining civic independence and accumulating wealth reflected in its surviving architecture. The town's position along the Neckar River made it an important trading center, while its vineyards have been cultivated for centuries, contributing to a distinct local identity rooted in craftsmanship and agriculture. Much of Esslingen's medieval character survived largely intact through later centuries, giving the town an unusually authentic historic atmosphere.
The town is also known for its Christmas market, regarded as one of Germany's most atmospheric. Set in the medieval old town squares, the market features traders and performers in period costume, deliberately evoking the character of a late medieval marketplace. This connection to the town's imperial city heritage has made the Esslingen Christmas market a notable destination within the German Christmas market tradition, drawing visitors who seek a historically rooted setting.

Organized by Esslingen Markt und Event GmbH, it features daily performances on multiple stages with fire artists, jugglers, minstrels, acrobats, and musicians, as well as artisan workshops and a medieval bathhouse.

We spent the afternoon at the Esslingen Medieval Christmas Market! There was so much to do here, and was very family friendly. We went on Thursday, November 27, so the crowds were not bad! The gluhwein cups were very unique and on-theme. We tried all the wine, bratwurst, and a cheesy raclette! There were old-fashioned kids rides, including a hand-cranked ferris wheel, and your standard carousel! The market offers your standard Christmas market gifts, but also includes medieval themed crafts,
