The Esslingen Mittelaltermarkt & Weihnachtsmarkt is a remarkable dual-market experience that transforms the entire Altstadt (Old Town) of Esslingen am Neckar into a living medieval tableau for four weeks before Christmas. Spread across Marktplatz, Rathausplatz, Hafenmarkt, and Zwergenland (Kleiner Markt), the market's 180 stalls are framed by what Esslingen claims to be Germany's oldest row of half-timbered houses, creating an atmosphere unlike any other Christmas market in the Stuttgart region. The medieval section immerses visitors in a sensory journey through history: costumed merchants hawk their wares, period-dressed craftsmen demonstrate ancient trades, and fire artists illuminate the night sky with whirling torches. Daily performances on four stages feature jugglers, stilt walkers, acrobats, minstrels, and storytellers, with approximately 500 cultural program events across the season. Hands-on workshops in medieval costume-making, juggling, historical dance, and archery at Esslingen Castle let visitors actively participate in the experience. A warm medieval bathhouse (Badezuber) at Hafenmarkt adds a unique relaxation option. The traditional Christmas market section at Marktplatz offers over 80 stalls with handcrafted ornaments, nativity figures, clay tealight houses, felt goods, and jewelry. On Advent weekends, more than 30 rotating artisans set up the special Adventsmarkt along Ritterstraße. A nostalgic carousel, candle-making workshop, living nativity scene at the Postmichelbrunnen, and a free storytelling tent for children round out the family-friendly offerings.
