Mittelaltermarkt & Weihnachtsmarkt - Zwergenland

The Mittelaltermarkt & Weihnachtsmarkt in Esslingen am Neckar is one of Germany's most distinctive holiday markets, blending a traditional Christmas market with a fully immersive medieval experience set against the backdrop of the city's centuries-old half-timbered houses. The Zwergenland (Dwarfland) section, located at the Kleiner Markt square, is a dedicated children's and family zone that anchors one of the market's four entertainment stages, making it a standout destination for families visiting the greater Esslingen Christmas market. Spanning four pre-Christmas weeks across the Altstadt, the market features approximately 180 stalls and around 500 cultural programme events. The Zwergenland area delights younger visitors with a hand-operated ferris wheel — claimed to be the smallest in the world — alongside medieval games such as archery and crossbow shooting. Throughout the market, costumed merchants, period craftsmen, fire artists, stilt walkers, jugglers, and acrobats perform daily across multiple stages including the Rathausplatz, Hafenmarkt, and Zwergenland itself. Storytelling sessions in the Märchenzelt (fairy tale tent) are free and require no reservation. The traditional Christmas market section offers over 80 stalls with handmade ornaments, nativity figures, clay tealight houses, felt goods, and jewelry. Food highlights include Käsespätzle, Bratwurst, cinnamon rolls, mulled wine, and sweet mead. On Advent weekends, more than 30 artisans set up the rotating Adventsmarkt along Ritterstraße. The market is open daily from 11:00 am to 8:30 pm, with extended hours until 9:30 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Arriving by S-Bahn Line S1 from Stuttgart — just 15–20 minutes away — is the easiest and most convenient option.
