The Esslingen Medieval Market & Christmas Market at Rathausplatz is one of Germany's most distinctive holiday events, blending authentic medieval atmosphere with traditional Christmas market charm across approximately 180 stalls in Esslingen am Neckar's beautifully preserved Old Town. Set against a backdrop of centuries-old half-timbered houses — including what Esslingen claims is the oldest row of such buildings in Germany — the Rathausplatz section serves as the heart of the medieval experience, featuring the primary performance stage and costumed merchants, craftsmen, and entertainers who bring the Middle Ages vividly to life. Visitors can watch fire artists, stilt walkers, jugglers, acrobats, and medieval musicians perform daily across multiple stages, while skilled artisans demonstrate ancient crafts such as metalsmithing and woodworking — with hands-on workshops available for both children and adults. The medieval section transports guests back in time with period-appropriate costumes, atmospheric lighting, and the scent of exotic spices and open fires drifting through the narrow lanes. The adjoining traditional Christmas market adds over 80 stalls offering handcrafted ornaments, nativity figures, felt goods, jewelry, and nostalgic toys, alongside a nostalgic carousel and a candle-making workshop. Food and drink are a highlight throughout: warm Glühwein, sweet mead, hearty Bratwurst, Käsespätzle, cinnamon rolls, roasted almonds, and waffles keep visitors fueled as they explore. On Advent weekends, more than 30 additional artisans set up in the Ritterstraße for a rotating specialty market. The market runs daily from 11 am, with extended hours on Fridays and Saturdays, and is easily reached from Stuttgart via the S1 S-Bahn in roughly 15–20 minutes.
